What brought you to NaNo?

For those of you who have done NaNo or are contemplating giving it a go this year:  How did you learn about NaNo?  What made you say - "I can do that."

For me it was October of 2006.  I was at a bookstore and I saw the book No Plot No Problem by Chris Baty, the founder of NaNoWriMo.  I thought, Hey, awesome.  I have no plot.  This will be great.

This will be my 7th Nano and I find that I'm right back where I started.

I have no plot.

But I do have a character - two actually.  My main character Indigo Summerland and Valentine Joel Penderghast VI (she calls him six for short.  He doesn't find it funny).  I had thought that he would be the antagonist.  He keeps hinting he might want to be a love interest.

I work at a title company and I have come up with some interesting names.  I've been writing them on a little 3x3 sticky.  My boss is probably wondering WTF, but he has yet to say anything.

Here's what I've collected.
These are real names that have come across my desk.

Stonewald
Don-ita
Garen
Edelgard
McMimimee
Mikell
Lundee
Nyee
Nova
Micca
Paige
Padjen
Colton Catmull

I write fantasy and have found it useful to have a list of possible names handy.

  1. That's so funny. I do the same thing with interesting names that come across my desk.
And I always start with a character or characters.

    1. It just depends for me. Sometimes a character jumps out at me, other times it is a place or something that catches my attention from the news or random conversation over heard.

  2. One of the girls went to school with a Paige, I have always loved that name. Ditto for a similar boy version: Tague (pronounced like the irritating flaps of fabric I cut out of all my clothes).

Today my mailbox said that someone appreciates me. It spurred me to update the very left-side info boxes with a new Donate option line, and reword the SERVICES tab.

I'm going to be cheering you on for the entire month, standing by, fully prepared, should you need any helpful ideas, suggestions, or input.
(Do I seem poised to you? I feel very poised....)

  3. Oh geez, I think it's such and undertaking to do NaNo. I probably won't ever do it so I live vicariously through my blogging friends. Good luck. I gave you the Great COmments Award yesterday. here's the link: http://conch-to-be.blogspot.com/2012/10/just-shoot-me-now.html
    Cheers!

  4. I think my brother told me about it, back in 2002. I guess what made me think I could do it was that I've always had such a love of writing--the process, the sitting down and bashing away at the keys. And because my brother wanted to do it, cause it's fun with someone else.

This year what makes me think I MIGHT do it is that I've won 4 times. But my life is so different right now--so emotionally poopy--it's gonna be a challenge. I'm afraid I just won't care. What made me win in the past was that I really, really cared about following through on the commitment.
