Awe shucks --Who doesn't love a black dog?
Okay, well maybe not THIS black dog.
Old Shuck has many names, Black Shuck, Old Shock or simply Shuck.
Old Shuck is one of many ghostly black dogs recorded across the British Isles. Sometimes he is considered an omen of death.
It is reported that if you are walking alone one night and you see a huge, black dog with eyes that are on fire walking beside you; or if you feel his hot breath one night, you have a year to live.
I read a short story once years, upon years ago. I can't even tell you if it was in a magazine or in a book, but the story dealt with Old Shuck. Instead of the predictor of death, he was the protector of women and children. I rather liked that version.
Chester the protector. (And all around cool dude! ;)
Awww! Look at Chester! I want to scritch his ears for him. :) As I was reading about Ole Shuck, all I could think was, "The grim!"
ReplyDelete"The Grim"? I"ll have to check it out.
DeleteHarry Potter reference...yes - I do believe they would be one and the same. Though the letter would be wrong ;) It's been so long since I read them I missed it. ahaha I bet I could mention it to the GKids and they'd know -- they still talk about Harry Potter all the time.
DeleteI'll take Chester, that other beast is chilling.
ReplyDeleteChester is a sweet, sweet puppy. Luvs him.
DeleteI think if I was walking at night and looked down to see a black dog whose eyes were BREATHING FIRE, I'd probably have a heart attack and die right then.
ReplyDeleteahahah oh so very true.
